Dear Erin,

Many say that summer memories will last a lifetime. What do you remember most about your best summers? Is it the feel of the sun on your skin, the excitement of certain songs or maybe the feeling of sand in between your toes? For many of us, it’s the adventures that the warm weather enabled us to take and the people we had alongside us. Summer is a magical time and we are so proud and humbled to be part of those memories for so many youth, teens, adults and families in LA. This summer was truly special and was built through the programs, adventures and possibilities created by you, our Team Members.

Here’s a little snapshot of summer 2023: Thousands of teens received free memberships and engaged in inspiring activities, from meeting Vice President Kamala Harris to working with major sports teams to advocate for youth representation and build community. Middle and high school-aged kids spent time away at Camp Whittle, learning about leadership, confidence and the importance of friendship. For many, it was their first time sleeping away from home. Kids from all over LA participated in day camp (including traditional summer day camp, beyond the bell, sports, specialty and teen day camp) through 23 of our branches. They remained active, worked on creative projects and learned how to resolve conflict while building relationships. Our aquatic programs have continued on with their momentum, with over 11,000 enrollments this summer. Free sports programming engaged more youth than ever before, keeping play at the forefront for kids aged 4 to 17. Over 350 seasonal summer positions were held by passionate individuals who thrive on working with and developing kids. In addition to everything I just mentioned, the much-anticipated reopening of both the Weingart East Los Angeles and Hollywood branches gave us a renewed presence and purpose in those communities. There is so much to be proud of this summer and I would even go as far as to say that yes, it was the best summer ever.

As we wrap up the summer season, it's a great time to recognize the individuals who are making these programs a reality. Our friends at Y-USA are now accepting nominations for both the 30 Under 30 award (for emerging Y professionals who are making an impact on the community) as well as the Women of Excellence recognition (celebrating exceptional women in all areas of YMCA leadership who are making a lasting impact in the Y and greater community).

To submit a nomination for 30 Under 30, please click here by September 20th. To submit a nomination for the Women of Excellence award, please click here from September 1 through 30th.

Thank you for all that you do for the LA Y!
