Dear LA Y Team Members,
Many of history’s greatest philosophers, authors, and poets have used their various perspectives and languages to articulate the significant role of growth in one’s ability to achieve happiness. It has been said that as humans, we will benefit from a lifetime of questioning the notions that challenge us the most. From the greatest minds, we are encouraged to seek a deeper understanding, to push the boundaries of our own knowledge, and to evolve. This month, I would like us to celebrate two of the many ways in which we are all inspiring growth in others and in ourselves.
With two of our six LA Y Employee Resource Groups growing towards the 100-member mark, ERGs are a great example of what Team Members can accomplish when connected with other passionate individuals and cause-driven work. Employee Resource Groups focus on providing a much-needed space for thoughtful discussions, inspiring great work and advocating for positive change across our communities. They provide a platform to those who may be reluctant to share otherwise. They spotlight the individual stories of impact that are taking place within and outside of their communities. They provide opportunities for all of us to learn through the experiences of others. This month, the LGBTQIA+ ERG will celebrate Pride Month through participation at the annual LA Pride Parade this Sunday. Also, this month, our African American Resource Network will sponsor and highlight the celebration of Juneteenth. Through these activities, please join each resource group to learn more about advocacy, education, and LA Y’s role in creating safer spaces for all. Next month, we will celebrate the grand opening of our new Leadership Development Center at the Mid Valley Y. With a full schedule of opportunities for staff at all levels to connect with learning opportunities, this new space is a dedicated location for LA Y Team Members to learn through in-person trainings, group discussions and most importantly, interactions with others. From financial wellness to leadership development, and mental health, there are more opportunities and paths than ever before for each of us to assemble and grow together.
While the Y has symbolized the spirit of growth through the ways in which we exist as an organization from the beginning, it’s how we utilize these opportunities now that will determine how each of us can change, grow and find fulfillment going forward. Please join me this month in finding inspiration in undiscovered areas, in allowing yourself the opportunity to be challenged and to embrace the concept that YOU are the best investment.
